FOLUR Ethiopia is an initiative focused on transforming the way land is used across the country by preventing forest lossrestoring degraded landscapes, and embedding sustainability within Ethiopia’s coffee value chains and broader food systems.

The program aims to protect remaining natural forests; especially in coffee‑growing regions; by promoting responsible land management practices and reducing pressures that lead to deforestation. At the same time, it works to revitalize degraded areas through targeted restoration efforts that improve ecosystem health, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience.

A core dimension of the project is the integration of sustainability into Ethiopia’s globally significant coffee sector. This includes promoting climate‑smart agricultural practices, improving traceability, strengthening livelihoods for farmers, and ensuring that coffee production supports, rather than threatens, the surrounding forest landscape. FOLUR Ethiopia also addresses sustainability within the wider food system, encouraging practices that boost productivity while conserving natural resources.

At present, there is no active public announcement or newly released update regarding this program. However, the overarching goal remains the same: to foster a development pathway that balances agricultural growth with environmental stewardship; ensuring healthier forests, stronger value chains, and a more sustainable future for Ethiopia.

Gender mainstreaming is a core design principle of the project. FOLUR Ethiopia has set a target of 50% female beneficiaries among the 440,000 people whose livelihoods it aims to improve. The project conducts a gender gap analysis and develops a dedicated Gender Action Plan to ensure women are included in leadership and decision-making roles within community resource management structures. Gender-transformative outcomes are pursued not just at the farm level, but also at the policy and coffee sector levels

Coffee is Ethiopia's single largest export commodity, generating approximately 30–35% of the country's total export revenue. However, as deforestation intensifies in coffee-growing regions, the very ecosystem that supports Ethiopia's prized wild Arabica varieties is under threat. Low farm-gate prices push farmers to expand into forested areas rather than intensifying sustainably. FOLUR Ethiopia addresses this by promoting deforestation-free coffee production, improving quality, enabling better certification and traceability, and connecting farmers to premium international markets — ensuring coffee production protects, rather than destroys, surrounding forests.

By 2031, FOLUR Ethiopia aims to achieve the following measurable results: • 7,288,195 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions avoided • 440,000 people with improved livelihoods (50% female) • 10,500 hectares of unproductive coffee gardens restored • 60,000 hectares of dry and moist Afromontane Forest restored and managed • 2,031,502 hectares of land brought under improved land use practices

What our supporters and partners say about our impact

Join and witness for our project success

Dear FOLUR Project Leaders and Colleagues, Good afternoon. I am very pleased with the recent field visit conducted under the FOLUR project. The visit was productive and encouraging.

Mr. Teressa

Climate director

Dear Colleagues, It is my great privilege to be part of this field visit. From my observation, the project is progressing on a very promising track. I would particularly like to commend the Oromia Old Coffee Rejuvenation initiative and its effective management. This effort not only preserves the cultural and economic value of coffee but also strengthens community engagement. Equally impressive is the livelihood initiative, which has inspired neighboring communities to join the cooperative, enhance their savings culture, and foster cooperative behavior. Such practices are vital for building resilience and promoting sustainable development. I strongly recommend that the successful experiences from Gommaa Woreda be scaled up to other woredas and regions.

Mr. Bonsa Merga

Coffee Development - CEO

An interesting and impressing work done. The nursery site is well managed. I think the intention is to distribute the seedlings for the farmers at the end of the day. So, It is good to have in mind there is enough land for planting. Otherwise, it may lead to further forest degradation

Zerihun (PhD)

Coffee development Advisor

Dear Colleagues, ‎First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this important field mission on FOLUR and to witness the accomplishments achieved so far. For me, the stage we are in right now is not the middle nor the final, but rather the very beginning of a journey that holds immense promise. What I observed yesterday was truly impressive and encouraging, giving me confidence in the path we are taking.

Mr. Kabtamu Girma
