March 21/7/2018 (PMD) Addis Ababa

A workshop was held at the Ministry of Planning and Development (MPD) of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia (FOLUR) to award 15 PhD candidates with the FOLUR Ethiopia Project.

The FOLUR project works on preventing deforestation, rehabilitating degraded lands, ensuring the sustainability of the coffee production and value chain, and ensuring food security. It is a strategic investment aimed at building Ethiopia’s research capacity.

The forum awarded sponsorship and official recognition to 15 highly qualified PhD candidates from nine Ethiopian universities. These scholars are expected to conduct research that will inform policy for the country, focusing on coffee cultivation, integrated land use, forest conservation, and food system transition.

The 15 selected students underwent a rigorous peer review process and were found to have excelled in their research ideas that aligned with the project’s priorities.

The event was attended by a wide range of participants, including senior government officials, regional and UNDP representatives, and university leaders. This project plays a significant role in building the country’s research capacity.

This award ceremony marks a major milestone in Fowler Ethiopia’s research and knowledge development journey. The information generated by the PhD students is expected to have a direct impact on policymaking and play a significant role in modernizing the country's natural resource management.

At the forum, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Planning and Development, universities, and the candidates, and it was stated that work will be done to create a way for other university scholars to have the opportunity in the same way in another round, which will benefit Ethiopia.
