Jimma, Ethiopia (MOPD)
The Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD), through its flagship climate initiative FOLUR Ethiopia, is accelerating progress in sustainable coffee production, forest restoration, and women’s livelihoods across four regions of the country.
Implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA),Ethiopian Forest Development (EFD), and regional institutions, the program operates in Oromia, South West Ethiopia, South Ethiopia, and Sidama regions.
The achievements and future priorities of the initiative were reviewed during the 4th Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting, held in Jimma, where participants assessed 2025 performance and approved the 2026 Annual Work Plan. The meeting was complemented by field visits showcasing tangible results in old coffee farm rejuvenation, seedling production, degraded landscape restoration, and women-centered livelihood interventions.
To date, the program has restored 2,274 hectares of aging coffee farms, directly benefiting 15,094 households, while 49,021 hectares of farmland have adopted sustainable land management practices. More than 2.2 million trees and seedlings have been planted to support agroforestry and landscape restoration efforts.
Women’s economic empowerment remains a cornerstone of the initiative. The project has established 466 women-led business groups, reaching 30,390 rural women, and has delivered benefits to over 107,000 people, 59 percent of whom are women.
Looking ahead, the 2026 work plan prioritizes scaling up coffee restoration efforts, strengthening participatory forest management, expanding women-focused livelihood opportunities, and launching the FOLUR Ethiopia website to enhance knowledge sharing and visibility of results.
The PSC concluded with key strategic decisions, including expanding restoration activities, retaining specialized coffee extension agents, strengthening financial accountability mechanisms, and promoting sustainable and inclusive business models for women and youth.
